193 development schemes executed in FYDP-III

DODOMA: MINISTER of State in the President’s Office, Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo has outlined key achievements obtained during the implementation of a 3rd Five-Year National Development Plan, among them 193 development schemes, which include 17 flagship projects.

Prof Mkumbo mentioned the achievements in the august House yesterday when tabling the State of National Economy, 2023 and the 2024/25 National Development Plan.

According to the minister, the 2023/24 national development plan is the fourth in the implementation of the third five-year national development plan (2021/22-2025/26), which focuses on increasing economic growth and people’s development.

The five-year national development plan has five top priorities which include catalysing a competitive and inclusive economy, strengthening production capacity in industries and service provision, widening base for business and investment, increasing peoples’ development as well as developing human resources.

In the implementation of the 2023/24 plan, the minister said, the government increased production capacities in agriculture, livestock and fisheries by intensifying the use of the best seedling and fertiliser.

The hectares of irrigation farming, according to the minister, had increased from 694,715 in 2019/20 to about 727,280.6 in 2022/23.

Other achievements include developing transport infrastructures as well as implementing digital infrastructure projects.

This includes the implementation of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) projects, whereas the Dar es Salaam Makutupora project 300kilometres had reached 98.93 per cent.

Others are 422-kilometre Morogoro-Makutupora (96.61 per cent), 371-kilometre Makutupora Tabora (14.22 per cent), Mwanza Isaka (341 kilometres-56.21 per cent), Tabora -Isaka (165 kilometres- 5.38 per cent) and Tabora-Kigoma (506 kilometres – 1.81 per cent).

Also, Prof Mkumbo noted that the government continues with projects for improving the Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), where two aircrafts (Boeing 737-9 Max) were purchased and received to make the company own a total of 16 aircrafts.

“It includes continuing with projects for developing the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga as well as the Kwala Dry Port in Ruvu as well as extending the roads infrastructure network to a total of 181,655.49 kilometres,’’ he said.

Prof Mkumbo further said that the government continued with the project for the construction of the Kigongo-Busisi bridge in Mwanza, where its implementation is now at 88 per cent.

The government also continued with the implementation of electricity projects, including the Julius Nyerere Hydro-power Project (JNHPP) (MW2,115), which has now reached 97.43 per cent of its implementation.

“We also continued to create a friendly environment for business and investment which has so far attracted both local and international investors,’’ he added.

According to the minister, there was a slight decrease in livestock deaths from 27 per cent in 2019/20 to 12 per cent in 2023/24. Also, production of fish had increased from 497,567 in 2019/20 to about 513,218 in 2023/24.

There was also an increase in the megawatts of electricity from 1,872.1MW in 2022/23 to about 2,138MW in March 2024. “This is because of the kicking off of production at the JNHPP (235MW), Kinyerezi I (160MW) and Rusumo (80MW),’’ added the minister.
