IGP: Stop it

TANZANIA, Dar es Salaam THE POLICE Force has issued a stern warning against people circulating messages of incitement to the public, ordering such individuals to stop the evil mission immediately or face the full wrath of the law.

According to police, the messages being circulated in social media aim at causing chaos in the country.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Camillus Wambura issued the warning during a press conference in Dar es Salaam, yesterday, stressing that such a criminal act will not be tolerated.

According to the IGP, the Police Force was prompted to issue the warning after it came to its attention of the presence of a group of individuals that has been   inciting people via messages in social media since Thursday, asking them to organise countrywide demonstrations.

“Police won’t tolerate the incitement which is being caused by the group…the work of identifying, arresting and interrogating suspects has begun as the police intend to fast track the task so that further  legal measures can be instituted,” said IGP Wambura.

The IGP revealed that the group is inciting Tanzanians to support them by coordinating protests that focus on opposing matters related to ports’ development.

“We hoped that all arguments related to the development of ports in the country would be answered by convincing arguments. Since the matter was also taken to court, we expected that they would have respect for the court ruling,” he said.

He added: “Some people have come up trying to win people by encouraging some Tanzanians to hold  demonstrations…another person has even gone further wanting to cause violence and chaos in the country.”

As per the laws of the land, the IGP observed that the anticipated protests are illegal and are contrary to the law, stressing that there will be no tolerance for any person who incites chaos in the country.

He cautioned all those involved in planning the protests, insisting that the police remained firm, and will not, in any way, be shaken.

“Don’t poke the bear, the police are always firm…I am warning them not to go on with their ill intention of causing incitement,” he warned.

Expounding further, he said if those people’s arguments were politically motivated, then they should have been channeled in the same way instead of taking a different line involving criminality.

On the other hand, IGP Wambura called upon Tanzanians to ignore such people with ill intention, saying Tanzania is a peaceful country. He said no person should try to disrupt the existing peace and tranquility.
