Accident claims 14 lives, injures six

KILIMANJARO: FOURTEEN people were killed and six others injured in a fatal accident that occurred on Friday night in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region.
Confirming the accident, Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Nurdin Babu said that of the six wounded, four of them were seriously injured.
The RC said that the accident occurred at Kikavu Bridge in Hai District, along the Arusha-Moshi highway, after a speeding truck hit a mini bus (Coaster).
“Preliminary reports indicate that the truck, which was traveling along the highway from Moshi to Arusha, struck the passenger vehicle from behind, causing it to lose control and rammed into the sides of the bridge before plunging into the Kikavu River,” he said.
RC Babu, who by the virtue of his post, is also the Chairman of the Kilimanjaro Regional Security Committee, said that, during the accident, six people died on the spot and eight others died on the way while being rushed to Hai District Hospital for treatment.
“The six injured were rushed to the KCMC Zonal Referral Hospital (KCMC ZRH) for treatment while the bodies of the deceased were preserved at Hai District Hospital”, he said, adding that, the relevant authorities have already started investigating the accident.

The management of the KCMC Regional Referral Hospital confirmed receiving the injured a few hours after the accident.
