‘Arts, entertainment skyrocket’

ARTS and entertainment sector recorded the highest growth rate in the 2022/23 fiscal year.

The Minister for Finance and Planning, Mwigulu Nchemba, revealed this on Thursday when presenting the economic survey 2022 report to the parliament and the national annual development plan 2023/24.

He highlighted the economic activities that recorded a high growth rate, including arts and entertainment (19.0 per cent), quarrying and mining (10.9 per cent), finance and insurance (9.2 per cent), accommodation and food service (9.0 per cent) and electricity supply (7.6 per cent).

Culture, Arts and Sports: A total of 1.07bn/- worth of credit were disbursed to 45 cultural and arts stakeholders.

The Government coordinated various concerts intending to enhance cultural heritage, including National Cultural Festival held in July 2022 in Dar es Salaam; the fifth East African Community Cultural Festival, also known as Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki Utamaduni Festival (JAMAFEST), was held on September 2022 in Bujumbura – Burundi; the 41st Bagamoyo International Culture and Arts Festival; The South Africa Cultural Season Festival held in November 2022; and Miss and Mr Deaf International (MMDI) competitions held in 2022 being the first time to be held in Africa.

Other achievements include: the qualification of the National Amputee Football Team (Tembo Warriors) in the quarter-finals of the Amputee World Cup, thus positioning Tanzania on the list of the top ten teams in the world; and the under 17 National Women’s Team (Serengeti Girls) qualified for the World Cup finals in India and reached the quarter-finals on October 2022.

In addition, Tanzania hosted the 44th General Meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on August 10th, 2022, held in Arusha City; Tanzania has submitted a joint bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations – AFCON 2027 in collaboration with Kenya and Uganda.

“Further, I would like to congratulate Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, for her initiative of rewarding every goal Simba and Young African Sports Clubs scored in international competitions.

“The initiative has boosted morale, and thus the clubs have earned 190m/-, whereas Simba  earned 55m/- and Young African earned 135m/-. Similarly, I applaud Simba for reaching the CAF champions league’s Quarter Finals.

“I would like to congratulate Yanga for reaching the final stage of the CAF Confederation Cup and becoming the runners-up to the competition as well as obtaining two awards for the best Goal Scorer (Fiston Kalala Mayele) and the Best Goalkeeper (Djigui Diarra).”
