Azam’s CAF deal propels Tanzanian sport

CAIRO, EGYPT: AZAM Media has secured a significant share of the media rights for the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) intercontinental competitions in the 2024-25 season, representing a monumental victory for Tanzanian sports broadcasting.

This milestone propels the homegrown broadcaster onto the grand stage of African football, where dreams are made and legends are born, marking a significant achievement in its already impressive ascent.

CAF announced on Monday via its social media platforms that Azam Media, alongside broadcasting giants SuperSport and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), will be responsible for bringing the continent’s most prestigious football competitions to millions of viewers across sub-Saharan Africa.

From the pulse-racing CAF Champions League to the trailblazing Women’s Champions League, the highly competitive CAF Confederation Cup and the much-anticipated 2025 CAF Super Cup, Azam is now poised to narrate Africa’s football journey to the world.

CAF, in a statement highlighting the importance of this partnership, said, “SuperSport, SABC and Azam Media have been participating competitively in the CAF media rights bids.

CAF welcomes them all as partners. We are committed to ensuring that CAF’s competitions, including its broadcast products, are world-class.”

SuperSport, the media juggernaut owned by MultiChoice, has secured the prized English-language pay-TV rights for CAF competitions, ensuring that its viewers get access to exclusive high-definition content.

Meanwhile, free-to-air rights, covering all languages, will be split between SABC, South Africa’s premier public-service broadcaster and Tanzania’s very own Azam Media.

This means Tanzanians from the sun-kissed plains of Kilimanjaro to the white sands of Zanzibar will have front-row seats to witness African football’s finest moments.

For Azam Media, this is more than just a deal— it’s a defining moment, one that places the broadcaster among the elites of African sports media.

Much like an underdog rising through the ranks, Azam has steadily built its reputation on the back of consistent and quality sports coverage.

The broadcaster already holds exclusive rights to the NBC Premier League, Tanzania’s top-flight football competition and has made a name for itself as a key player in the country’s entertainment industry, particularly in promoting the local ‘Bongomovie’ film scene.

Now, with the CAF deal in its portfolio, Azam is ready to spread its wings further across the continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, commenting on the announcement, said: “The exponential growth and global competitiveness of football in Africa has resulted in substantial interest from major African and international broadcasters in African football.”

Motsepe’s words underscore the rapid rise of African football on the world stage and, by extension, the role Azam Media is set to play in delivering this spectacle to fans both in Tanzania and beyond.

The CAF deal also underscores Azam Media’s growing reach.

No longer just a Tanzanian powerhouse, the broadcaster’s influence stretches to over five countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

From the thrill of the last-minute goal to the heartbreak of a near miss, Tanzanians can expect to live every moment in real time, thanks to Azam’s dedicated coverage.

In the grand theatre of African football broadcasting, Azam Media is no longer content to play a supporting role.

The broadcaster is now firmly in the spotlight, carving out its place as a leading force in the region’s sports and entertainment industry.

As the 2024-25 CAF competitions draw near, one thing is certain—Azam Media is ready to take on the continent, and the future of African football is looking brighter than ever.
