Black Mambaz triumph over Nyuki in Hockey Opener

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Black Mambaz team made a strong start at the 2nd edition of the Black Mambaz Hockey Tournament, held at the Lugalo Hockey Grounds in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The four-day event, featuring eight men’s teams and five women’s teams, is set to conclude on Sunday.

In the opening match of Pool A, Black Mambaz secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Nyuki of Zanzibar.

Later in the day, Twende Boys faced off against the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) team in a Group B clash.

The first day of the tournament also highlighted women’s matches, with intense competition among the teams.

TPDF Ladies and Twende Ladies emerged as the top performers, each securing two wins. The women’s teams participating are Majani ya Chai, TPDF Ladies, Black Mambaz Ladies, Buza Girls and Twende Ladies.

TPDF Ladies showcased their dominance with a 2-0 win over Twende and a resounding 12-0 victory against Majani ya Chai.

Meanwhile, Twende Ladies bounced back from their initial loss to defeat Black Mambaz Ladies 2-1 and then overcome Buza Girls 8-1.

Buza Girls managed to salvage some pride with a 4-1 win over Majani ya Chai.

The tournament is being hosted by the Dar es Salaam-based Black Mambaz Club under the auspices of the Tanzania Hockey Association (THA).

THA Chairman Kaushik Doshi commented to the ‘Daily News’ that the opening day went smoothly and that the tournament is progressing well.

The eight men’s teams are divided into two groups: Pool A includes Black Mambaz, Nyuki of Zanzibar, JMK Park and Ngome, while Pool B features Twende Boys, TPDF KMKM of Zanzibar, and Moshi Khalsa from Kilimanjaro.

Upcoming matches include JMK Park versus Ngome on Friday, with Ngome also set to play Black Mambaz later that day. Additionally, KMKM will face Moshi Khalsa before TPDF takes on KMKM.

The tournament will continue through tomorrow, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals.
