British actor Elba to transform African film industry

UNITED KINGDOM: BRITISH actor Idris Elba has announced his intention to relocate to Africa within the next decade, driven by a commitment to support the continent’s growing film industry.

The 52-year-old, celebrated for his roles in acclaimed productions such as ‘The Wire’ and ‘Long Walk to Freedom’, aims to establish film studios in Zanzibar Isles and in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

Born in London to a Ghanaian mother and a Sierra Leonean father, Elba has always felt a profound connection to Africa. He envisions using his star power to elevate the continent’s film industry, emphasising the importance of Africans telling their own stories.

At a recent industry event in Accra, Elba expressed his aspirations: “I am here to bolster the film industry.

This is a 10-year process and I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in-country and on my continent.” He elaborated on his desire to immerse himself in diverse storytelling, stating: “I will live in Accra, Freetown and Zanzibar and I want to engage with the narratives that truly matter.” He pointed out that the main target is the importance of ensuring Africans play a leading role throughout the filmmaking process from acting to production financing and distribution of more content to the world.

Elba highlighted the critical need for Africans to play leading roles throughout the filmmaking process, from acting to production and distribution.

He noted: “We must ensure Africans are at the forefront of creating and sharing our stories with the world.” He also addressed the limited global perceptions of Africa, often framed by narratives of historical trauma, such as slavery and conflict.

“This sector is a form of soft power for Ghana and the continent,” he remarked. “When you watch films about Africa, you often only see trauma.

However, when you come to Africa, you’ll discover the richness and diversity of our cultures.” Through his planned ventures, Elba hopes to transform the narrative surrounding African cinema, showcasing the continent’s vibrant stories and experiences to a global audience.
