Bunge committee urges lab, pharmacy services quality

DODOMA: THE PARLIAMENTARY Standing Committee on Health and HIV/AIDS has urged the laboratory and pharmacy councils to ensure top-notch services while providing comprehensive training for professionals in the sectors.
The call was issued on Friday by Committees Vice Chairperson Bernadetha Mshashu during the presentation of the councils’ reports at the Pius Msekwa Hall in Dodoma.
“Laboratory tests are crucial but pharmacists distributing medication without a doctor’s prescription is unacceptable. This practice can lead to drug resistance and adverse health effects,” Ms Mshashu said.
She also commended the councils for providing continuous training for professionals, enabling them to adhere to the rules, laws and ethics of their professions.
Health Minister Jenista Mhagama said the government has established systems that ensure consistent laboratory results across different facilities, aiming at maintaining accuracy in diagnostic processes, saying reliable laboratory tests form the foundation of treatment.
“In the treatment chain, laboratories and pharmacies play a key role. It starts with the lab, followed by treatment where pharmacy services are critical. Improving lab services is essential for better healthcare,” said Minister Mhagama.

The minister further said that the National Laboratory has been upgraded to serve as a centre for training on the safety and security of hazardous pathogens, further enhancing public health protection.
Meanwhile, Minister Mhagama also met with the leadership of the Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Association (TANNA) to discuss the implementation of recommendations raised during the association’s annual meeting on May 12, 2024 that focused on improving the quality of healthcare services.
Ms Mhagama acknowledged the significant contributions of nurses and midwives to the health sector and commended their dedication to serving the public. One of her main priorities is ensuring that nurses and midwives receive promotions, similar to other cadres.
” While we address your challenges, please help us enforce professional ethics among nurses to improve work efficiency,” she urged.
TANNA President Alexender Baluhya expressed confidence in the government, noting that it is responsive and will address their concerns in a timely manner to enhance their work.
He said that the meeting with Minister Mhagama was a follow up on the implementation of the issues raised by nurses during the annual meeting in Tanga, including the issue of promotions.
