Chana on course as Lugalo Ladies tees off

AS national level Lugalo Ladies Golf tournament tees off at the club’s course today, organisers said the event will enable the country to form the formidable national ladies team.

Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) competition secretary, Hawa Wanyeche  told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ in Dar es Salaam yesterday the tournament will be used to prepare quality players for the national team, hence this  weekend’s battle will be first qualifying event.

The national team has a big task to represent the country in the East and Central African All Africa Challenge Trophy (EC-AACT) to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in November this year.

She said the regional level battle is held every two years, and this time around Rwanda was announced to host it during the biannual continental level event; All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) Championship held in Dar es Salaam, in September last year.

Wanyeche, who was part of the national team squad that finished third overall in the   AACT, said that they are already planning to select a strong team for Rwanda’s prestigious event and that they will use the upcoming tournament to assess performances of players.

“This weekend’s event will enable players to earn valuable points in the order of merits,” she explained.

“As usual we are looking for a strong team which can only be known through tournament’s performance, we will start with Lugalo Ladies Open and continue with other coming ladies showdown,” she added.

Wanyeche continues to say that TLGU plans to organise another national-level event like Morogoro Ladies Open, Dar es Salaam Ladies Open and Tanzania Ladies Open Championship before the Rwandan mission.

Therefore, she said, it is necessary for those wishing to make it to the national team to compete at the tournament and do well to collect important order of merit points.

Tanzania has a good record in the EC-AACT after winning three times including the inaugural event held in Kampala in 2009, 2021 and 2011 when Tanzania hosted  at the Lugalo Club course.

The countries that will participate in the Eastern and Central Region are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Mauritius, Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and hosts Rwanda.

Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports Pindi Chana heads to grace the event which has attracted over 100 golfers.
