Councils urged to take charge of road, drainage cleaning

DODOMA: THE government has instructed local councils across the country to assume responsibility for cleaning roads and drainage systems within their jurisdictions.

This directive comes as the government invests heavily in improving the nation’s road infrastructure.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Eng Rogatus Mativila, said this during a recent inspection visit to road construction projects in Kibakwe Ward, Mpwapwa District.

He stressed that maintaining these newly built roads is crucial, and local councils should mobilize residents to participate in cleaning efforts.

“Councils must take charge of cleaning roads within their municipalities, towns, and cities,” he said.

“The government has built good roads; let’s take care of them to benefit ourselves,” He even suggested ways residents could contribute, such as those living near roadsides volunteering to cut grass along the verges.

Speaking on the ongoing road construction projects by TARURA in Mpwapwa district, he highlighted the town’s growing appeal due to these developments.

In Kibakwe Ward, TARURA has completed a 1.8 km paved road and is currently working on an additional 1 km, aiming to finish 2.8-km of road construction by September this year.

“We thank the government for securing funds for road construction. The public is encouraged to maintain these roads,” he added.

“The government recognizes the importance of urban road development and is working to eliminate obstacles caused by a lack of crossings or bridges. Funds have been allocated to ensure district headquarters and major growing towns have paved roads to connect urban areas.”

Kibakwe Ward Executive Officer, Mr Baraka Zebedayo, noted that the government is actively promoting citizen participation in road maintenance, including cleaning drains and roadsides and avoiding disruptive activities on the roads.

“Every last Saturday of the month, we conduct cleanup activities,” he said.

Councillor of Kibakwe Ward, Mr Athanas Chisanza, expressed gratitude to the government for funding road construction projects, which have accelerated development in their ward and benefited citizens significantly.

He noted that paved roads have led to notable economic improvements, especially since Kibakwe is a major crop-producing area, making transportation easier compared to previous years when roads were in poor condition.
