Dar es Salaam to host landmark conference on economic dispute

DAR ES SALAAM: Over 150 participants from East Africa and other countries are set to meet in Dar es Salaam for the 7th General Conference on the Resolution of Economic Disputes.

The event, organized by the Tanzania Institute of Arbitration (TIArb), aims to address the backlog of cases in Tanzanian courts by promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods.

The event scheduled to take place on August 22 to 23 this year, will also focus on resolving economic disputes through ADR, with a particular emphasis on the construction sector and international investment conflicts.

In the lead-up to the conference, a week dedicated to public education will aim to raise awareness among citizens and the business community about the benefits of ADR and how disputes can be effectively resolved without going to court.

Vice President of TIArb , Mr. Aderickson Njunwa on Monday highlighted the importance of the conference in alleviating the pressure on the judiciary.

He also insisted that the conference also aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s 4R philosophy, which encourages the use of ADR in handling investment disputes.

“Our primary objective is to bring together experts in ADR, dispute managers, and educators to enhance the capacity of arbitrators and stakeholders involved in resolving construction and international investment disputes,” Njunwa added.

He also said the participants will exchange experiences on dispute resolution in the context of technological advancements, legal changes, and evolving systems for managing business conflicts.

Justice Abdallah Ganzi of the High Court’s Commercial Division emphasized the critical role of institutions like TIArb in supporting the judiciary by providing alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

He also pointed out the importance of well-drafted contracts and adherence to legal standards in preventing disputes.

The week-long event, with a focus on construction and international investment disputes, will provide a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, improve ADR practices, and contribute to a more efficient and effective dispute resolution process in Tanzania.
