Dar introduce obstacle sports training

DAR ES SALAAM: OVER 50 participants from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Denmark are currently taking part in the first-ever Official Level 1 Obstacle Sports Adventure Racing Training, organised by the Dar es Salaam-based Scope Event. The training, which began on Friday, will conclude today.

Scope Event Secretary, Abdallah Chapa, noted that the training has attracted participants from across various Tanzanian regions, including Morogoro, Mbeya, Dodoma, Zanzibar, Songwe, Arusha and Dar es Salaam, ensuring broad representation.

The sessions are being led by Nayibe Statia, Chair of the World Obstacle Technical Officiating Committee from the International Sport Obstacles Federation (FISO).

Adventure racing, also known as expedition racing, is a multidisciplinary team sport involving navigation over unmarked wilderness courses and can last from two hours to two weeks. The sport combines running, trekking, mountain biking and kayaking, making it a challenging endurance event.

At the opening of the training, Statia expressed her enthusiasm for conducting the training in Tanzania. “It is an honour to be in such a wonderful country and to facilitate this training, which is crucial for the sport’s introduction, promotion and development,” Statia said.

She emphasised that the training is focused on equipping officials with the necessary skills to correctly apply the rules of obstacle racing. “Starting with the officials is essential for ensuring that the rules are implemented properly and that the sport can grow effectively,” Statia added.

Although obstacle racing is new to Tanzania, Statia believes it has significant potential if given proper attention. The training will include a two-day practical session at Pande Game Reserve in Dar es Salaam, allowing participants to apply what they have learned in a hands-on environment.

“This initial focus on training officials is a critical step in sports development,” Statia explained. “Our goal is to provide valuable knowledge that participants can use to advance the sport from the ground up, ensuring that all aspects are well-supported and effectively managed.”
