DCI urges RPCs to uphold human rights ahead of elections

DAR ES SALAAM: Criminal Investigation (DCI), Ramadhani Kingai has urged Regional Police Commanders (RPCs) across the country to observe human rights in their daily  duties and in particular at this time when the country heads to local government elections and general election.

DCI Kingai was speaking to RPCs during the closing of the two-day workshop that brought together RPCs. The DCI represented the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillus Wambura.

The workshop focused on the secured and peaceful management of electoral and democratic processes.

“The training emphasised fundamental principles of human rights, including the right to life, freedom of expression and the right to assembly. It is our duty to ensure that your teams fully understand and respect these rights while carrying out their daily responsibilities,” said DCI Kingai.

He added: “I urge each of you who received this training to ensure that the knowledge gained is passed on to all officers under your command across the country so that during the upcoming election, everyone acts in accordance with the law and respects fundamental human rights.”

DCI Kingai also highlighted the importance of the Police Force to maintain professionalism in their duties, noting that the workshop was timely, as the skills gained will enhance the ability of officers to work more efficiently and professionally.

“This training is aimed at increasing awareness of human rights among Tanzania’s police commanders. As we prepare for these significant national events, it is crucial that the Police Force possesses sufficient professionalism, not only in enforcing the law but also in upholding the fundamental rights of all citizens,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of other RPCs, Mwanza Regional Police Commander, Wilbroad Mutafungwa said the training has equipped them with the necessary skills to face various challenges that may arise during the electoral process.

“This workshop has been of great benefit to us. We have gained sufficient knowledge that we will pass on to our officers within the police force,” said Mr Mutafungwa.

On his part, the National Coordinator for the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), Mr Onesmo Olengurumwa said that the purpose of the workshop was to ensure that election processes in the country are conducted peacefully and without violation of human rights.

“After this training, we believe the election processes will proceed based on constitutional principles, laws and human rights and that is our goal. If the election processes follow these principles, there will be no breach of peace or violation of human rights,” he said.
