Desouza: Senior player excels in quintet sports gala  

VETERAN badminton player Anthony Desouza stunned sports fans after collecting five medals in the just-ended Lenten tournament at the Dar es Salaam Institute (DI) Club in Dar es Salaam.

Organised by the Dar es Salaam Institute the Lenten tournament is part of the celebration in the month of Lent (fasting 40 days till Easter) involving various sports disciplines.

The event involves eight games including badminton, darts, table tennis, hockey, snooker, carrom and soccer which players battle for the top honours.

However, veteran Desouza defied age barrier to win five medals which included four gold and a silver during the event.

Desouza dominated the event’s podium with a broad smile when collecting the five titles in the event’s prize-giving ceremony held at the club on Thursday.

His first gold came after his partnership with  Adriel Almeida to win the badminton doubles, then he went on to win table tennis gold also doubles category.

This time he paired with Jerry Barreto.

He then won another gold in the darts team event and hockey team tournaments.

He claimed a silver medal in table tennis singles.

Joyful Desouza told the ‘Sunday News’ after receiving medals that he was delighted to stay in competitive form and win gold and silver medals.

“I’m very happy to win the medals in the tournament, it is special because it has happened in different types of sports,” he said.

Adding, Desouza said the tournament was very exciting and he showered praises on the organisers and the sponsors of the successful event.
