Education in the Digital Age: HakiElimu Launches VR Pilot for Tanzanian Teachers

DAR ES SALAAM: HakiElimu has officially launched a pioneering two-year pilot project aimed at improving teachers’ professional skills through the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology.
The initiative supported by the Government of Finland marks a significant advancement in integrating cutting-edge technology into Tanzania’s education system, transforming teaching and learning methods across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Head of Programs at HakiElimu Mr Godfrey Boniventura, highlighted that the project represents a bold step in incorporating advanced VR technology into classrooms, with the objective of improving both educational outcomes and teacher effectiveness.
“As technology becomes more central to every aspect of our lives, it is crucial that we equip our teachers with the skills and tools they need to provide the best learning experiences for their students,” said Boniventura.
He emphasized that VR could make complex subjects easier to understand, bring abstract concepts to life, and significantly boost student engagement.
“Virtual Reality is not just a tool for entertainment; it has the potential to address skills gaps and foster creativity and critical thinking,” he added.
The pilot project is expected to offer valuable insights and evidence that could pave the way for the broader adoption of VR and other technological solutions within Tanzanian education.

On his part, Director of Vocational Education and Training (VETA) Mr Abdallah Ngodu, further elaborated that the project will train VETA staff to become master trainers in VR technology.
He also added that the trainers will then transfer their knowledge to other staff members, helping develop more digital content for various occupations as needed.
“As VR and AR technologies are known for their interactive and immersive learning environments, we plan to utilize these tools in our centers to engage students in virtual practical simulations,” he said.
The Executive Director of the Zanzibar Vocational Training Authority, Dr. Bakari Ali Silima, stressed that the digital system will enable one teacher to instruct multiple students in different locations simultaneously.
He said the three-dimensional technology will revolutionize training delivery and expand educational reach.
The project is being implemented in partnership with several key stakeholders, including 3DBear, Hamk, Save the Children, and five academic institutions.
