Farmers told to adopt highyield breeding technology

TANZANIA: LIVESTOCK farmers have been encouraged to use high-yield breeding technology to increase productivity and boost income.
Urus Tanzania Country Manager Mr Edson Mfuru said ahead of this year’s Nanenane edition that the improved breeding technology can boost yields, enhance productivity, profitability and overall sustainability of livestock farming operations.
“Our primary objective is to support livestock keepers across Tanzania with advanced crossbreeding programmes that can result in high-quality heifer and bull calves using our semen,” he said.

In this year agricultural exhibitions, Urus Tanzania will participate in six regions namely Dodoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Kagera, Arusha, and Simiyu.
Urus Tanzania, specialised in animal genetics, dairy, and beef cattle breeding, will showcase high-yield livestock breeding technology from the US and Brazil in this year’s Nanenane edition.
Statistics from the Livestock Sector Transformation Plan 2022/23-2026/27 indicate that the sector continues to face challenges including the use of indigenous cattle varieties with low productivity.
He emphasised that hybrid varieties are often more resistant to common diseases and parasites, reducing the need for medical treatments and associated costs.
Increased resistance leads to lower mortality rates, ensuring a more stable and predictable production output.
