Gamondi urges Yanga to push hard

DAR ES SALAAM: YOUNG Africans coach, Miguel Gamondi, has asked his team to give their all in Saturday’s return leg CAF Champions League (CAF CL) encounter against CBE at the New Amaan Sports Complex in Zanzibar.

Coach Gamondi made these remarks upon his return from Ethiopia at Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

Yanga won the away leg by a slim 1-0 margin.

“After the first leg match, we now need to recover and focus on the next fixture. We have another 90 minutes to determine our fate,” he said.

Speaking on the match yesterday, coach Gamondi conveyed his displeasure with his team’s close victory and his displeasure with his players for not taking advantage of the scoring opportunities they produced.

“Of course, I was not happy with the performance of my team due to the fact that we missed many scoring opportunities.

“Our target was to seal group stage qualification in Ethiopia. I cannot explain why we missed so many scoring chances.

It was unbelievable not to utilise them well; we could have even scored seven easy goals during the encounter. To me, winning 1-0 is not enough. But this happens in football sometimes,” Gamondi noted.

In addition to expressing his disappointment with his charges’ performance especially in the finishing area, he also mentioned that the pitch and altitude were some of the factors that forced them to perform below expectations.

Again, he pointed out that 14 of his players who were on national team duties had fatigue as they had to travel after their respective international matches to join their colleagues in Ethiopia.

“The pitch was not good to play professional football and the altitude was also not pleasing to allow nice football but we should forget all that and focus on the Saturday’s game,” he said
