Government urged to increase research funding for economic growth

ZANZIBAR: MEMBERS of the Zanzibar House of Representatives have called on the government to enhance funding for research at higher learning institutions, to support the country’s social and economic development.
“Our efforts to advance our nation must be backed by quality research across various fields.
We urge the government to allocate sufficient funds for this purpose,” said Mr. Ameir Abdalla Ameir, the representative for Mwanakwerekwe Constituency.
In response, the Minister of State in the President’s Office (Labour, Economy and Investments), Mr Sharif Ali Sharif, emphasised the importance of research results in achieving development goals.

He noted that the 2021/2026 research agenda for his ministry, coordinated by the planning commission, aims to identify areas that will lead to positive changes across different sectors.
“Digitalisation and the application of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) are crucial for reforms.
My ministry, along with the government, will continue to support research that fosters positive developments in investments and employment”, he stated.
