Govt reaffirms commitment to boost tourism, targets five million visitors

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a favourable environment for both local and foreign investors in the tourism sector, aiming to boost the industry and get five million tourists annually by 2025.

Deputy Minister for Transport, Mr David Kihenzile said that on Friday during the Tanzania Society of Tourism Agents (TASOTA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Dar es Salaam.

Mr Kihenzile noted that during the Covid-19 pandemic, tourist numbers plummeted to under one million, but they have since nearly reached two million, with a target of five million visitors.

“Our country’s tourism potential is vast and we have a unique opportunity to distinguish ourselves on the global stage through innovation, growth and sustainability. Our stunning landscapes, cultural diversity and unparalleled wildlife can attract more visitors while preserving these treasures for future generations,” he said.

He also explained that the government has allocated over 1tri/- over three years to enhance airport facilities, part of a broader initiative to improve the tourism sector.

The construction of a new passenger terminal at Songwe Airport has been completed, alongside upgrades at Mpanda, Katavi, Kigoma, Mtwara and Lindi airports.

“This demonstrates the government’s strong commitment, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to invigorate the tourism sector and attract various companies to the country,” he said.

The two-day event brought together key stakeholders from the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors for in-depth discussions, networking and collaboration aimed at advancing Tanzania’s travel industry.

TASOTA Chairperson Ms Agnes Rwegasira said: “As TASOTA, we plan to collaborate with the government and private organisations to promote domestic and foreign tourism in line with national policies. By supporting and improving hotels, travel agencies and tour guides, we can become more competitive in the industry.”
