Govt to continue enhancing health services, Tanga RC says

MUHEZA, TANGA: THE government is committed to further improving health services to ensure they benefit citizens, according to Tanga Regional Commissioner, Ambassador Batilda Burian.
She made this statement during the launch of the Mama Samia Eye Clinic in Muheza District over the weekend.
Ambassador Burian said that the government has allocated over 97bn/- to enhance health services in the Tanga Region.
“The government is dedicated to advancing health services, and the region has received more than 97.9bn/- for constructing hospitals, health centres and dispensaries,” she said.
“In our region, we have built 72 dispensaries, more than 23 health centres, six new hospitals and renovated three district hospitals among other improvements,” she said.
Regarding the Mama Samia Eye Clinic, the Regional Commissioner praised the private sector’s contribution in collaborating with the government to extend health services closer to the people through various medical camps.

The Programme Coordinator for Samia Eye Clinic, Amina Ramadhan said that the camp registered 18,000 people with eye problems in just one day.
“Over the three days of service, we expect to assist around 2,000 people,” she added.
Ms Ramadhan noted that the Muheza eye camp is the seventh for this year, with a total of 26,000 people having received services across various areas within the district each month.
“A total of 1,800 people have undergone cataract surgery during our time in Muheza,” she said.
Mariam Wandi, a 90-year-old resident of Muheza, expressed her gratitude, stating that the eye camp has provided crucial services to low-income citizens.
“I was hesitant to go to the hospital due to financial constraints and lack of insurance.
When I learned about the free services, I decided to attend and I’m thankful for the care I received,” she said.
Fatuma Mohamed, 78, who had been suffering from eye problems for about two years, commended the Mo Dewji Foundation for organising the eye camp in the district.
She urged the government to continue improving health services, particularly for those with eye diseases.
