INEC urges citizens to show up for PVR update

ZANZIBAR: THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed to all eligible persons for general elections, living in Zanzibar, to turnout in big numbers to register for the 2025 general election.

The call was made at the Idriss Abdulwakil Hall, Zanzibar City by the High Court Judge, Asina Omari at the opening of the one-day sensitising seminar for stakeholders in elections, on the update of the Permanent Voters Register (PVR) for the union elections.

The seven days exercise begins on Monday 07 to 13 October 2024, in all regions of Unguja and Pemba, and the registration centres will be opened at 08:00am in the morning and closed at 06:00pm in the evening.

Opening a similar seminar in Pemba, the INEC Vice Chairman Judge of the Court of Appeal (Retired), Mbarouk Salim Mbarouk also asked the stakeholders: political parties, faith-based organisation and NGOs, to educate their followers on the importance of registering as a voter.

At different occasions, both INEC leaders/Members said it is the sixth round of voters’ registration/ update of the PVR and that in Zanzibar they are targeting those who do not qualify to be registered by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) but are eligible to vote for the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Ms Asina reminded that INEC’s exercise is backed by the provisions of section 13(2) of the elections Law which stipulates about electing the union President, Members of Parliament and Councilors; and other amended laws and regulations which requires the PVR update twice before the general elections.

She explained that this time around registration is of its kind since it is including prisoners, who meet the conditions for registration and voting as per amended laws.

The launch of the improvement of PVR started on July 20, 2024, in Kigoma region and moved to Tabora, Katavi, Geita, Kagera, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Mara, Simiyu, Manyara, Singida and part of Dodoma Region.
