JATA urges more investment ahead of 2028 Olympics

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Judo Association of Tanzania (JATA) is calling on the government and stakeholders to invest more in sports in preparation for the 2028 Olympics Games.
JATA has submitted a proposal to the National Sports Council (NSC) seeking to identify potential investors to support the development of a competitive team for the sport in the upcoming games.
In a recent interview with the Daily News, JATA Secretary General Innocent Mallya discussed insights gained from the recent Olympic Games held in France.
He stressed that investing in international training camps could greatly enhance Tanzania’s chances of winning medals.
“This year, we had four players participate in a camp organised by the International Judo Association.
Unfortunately, three had to leave early because, despite the camp being free, they could not afford the expenses for various qualifying competitions,” Mallya explained.
He highlighted the challenges faced during a year-long camp in Uzbekistan, where four players participated but many were unable to complete their training due to financial constraints.
In light of these challenges, JATA is now collaborating with the government to strategise for the 2028 Olympics in the United States.
Mallya pointed to Andrew Mlugu, the only player who managed to stay in the international camp in France for a full year, as an example of what consistent investment can achieve.
Mlugu reached the round at the Olympics, underscoring the importance of sustained and early preparation.

“JATA is advocating for early engagement with stakeholders to secure necessary resources,” Mallya said.
“Starting preparations from January next year will enable athletes to train both physically and mentally, improving their chances of competing effectively and bringing home medals, as demonstrated by other countries.”
