JKCI to offer heart screening for Arusha residents

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) has launched a four-day heart screening and treatment camp for residents of Arusha and surrounding regions.

JKCI Executive Director Dr Peter Kisenge announced that the camp will be held from today to Friday at the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC) grounds, in collaboration with the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (Selian) and the Arusha Regional Commissioner’s Office.

Dr Kisenge urged residents to turn up in large numbers, emphasising that those diagnosed with heart conditions will receive treatment and critical cases will be referred to JKCI in Dar es Salaam.

He said the importance of regular heart check-ups, noting that many individuals may live with undiagnosed heart disease. In addition to screenings, nutritionists will be available to educate the public on healthy eating habits to prevent noncommunicable diseases, including heart disease.

Dr Kisenge encouraged attendees to follow expert advice on maintaining a healthy diet.

He also mentioned the advancements at JKCI in medical equipment and cardiology expertise, which have significantly reduced the need to send patients abroad for treatment by over 90 per cent.

Dr Kisenge expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for investing in the institute, making it a preferred destination for heart treatment in Africa.

This initiative follows similar efforts, including recent screenings at the Geita mineral exhibition in collaboration with Chato Regional Hospital.

Dr Kisenge reaffirmed JKCI’s commitment to partnering with hospitals nationwide to fulfill President Samia’s vision of making Tanzania a hub for medical tourism.

Director General of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Professor Mohamed Janabi, commended the collaboration and praised Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda’s efforts in promoting medical tourism.
