Kagera police step up investigations on sexual exploitation incidents

KAGERA: POLICE in Kagera Region have heightened investigations amidst increased incidents involving young children who are reported to have been sexually exploited.

Acting Kagera Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Yussuf D Yussuf explained that two Bukoba Municipal residents have already been arraigned in court accused of sexual exploitation of minors.

He named the suspects as 63-year-old Haruna Ayubu Rubai, who was arraigned in court on Wednesday facing a Criminal Case No 30251/2024 and 30-year old Abdul Suleiman, from Kahororo Ward who is facing a Criminal Case No 22889/2024.

He explained that the accused (Rubai), who owns Rubai Physical Exercise Centre in Bukoba Municipality   is facing several criminal cases for allegedly raping three minors (names withheld) aged below 12 years.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people gathered at the Bukoba District Magistrates Court yesterday to witness the arraignment of Abdul Suleiman, a 30-year-old resident of Kahororo Ward in Bukoba Municipality who is accused of sexually exploiting minors.

Prosecuting State Attorney Agnes Awino informed the court, which was held in camera, that between April and July of this year, Suleiman allegedly sexually exploited six minors (names withheld), aged between 6 and 9 years. The charges against him include rape and having carnal knowledge against the order of nature.

Awino confirmed that the investigations were complete and that the court proceeded with the preliminary hearing (PH). One witness testified on behalf of the prosecution. Suleiman pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Resident Magistrate Andrew Kabuka adjourned Criminal Case No 22889/2024 until November 6 for further proceedings and ordered that Suleiman be remanded in custody.
