Maritime infrastructure investment vital for economic growth
DAR ES SALAAM: The government continues to make strategic investments in maritime transport infrastructure as part of its broader efforts to accelerate economic growth.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Prof Godius Kahyarara made the statement when opening of the 27th Port State Control Committee meeting of the Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding (IOMOU) in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.
“The ongoing maritime infrastructure projects in various part of the country are designed to enhance Tanzania’s connectivity, boost trade and solidify its position as a key player in regional and global maritime logistics,” he said.
He highlighted that the Indian Ocean is a major shipping route, and Tanzania’s ports are essential hubs for international trade.

The Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr Mohamed Salum, expressed pride in hosting the international meeting for Indian Ocean region countries as a platform for member countries to exchange experiences on ship inspections at their ports, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of maritime operations.
Alongside the hosting country, experts from 13 countries namely Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Madagascar, the Seychelles, India, Iran, Japan, Comoros, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Australia, are participating in the week-long meeting.
The event marks the 25th anniversary of the IOMOU, which aims to identify and eliminate sub-standard ships from the Indian Ocean. Tanzania was among the first six countries to sign this agreement, which now has 20 member countries.
The meeting that started on Monday this week will continue until Friday, focusing on cooperation in inspecting international ships, protecting transportation vehicles, and preserving the marine environment.
