Mmachinga wishes Tanzanian player breaks goal record

DAR ES SALAAM: MOHAMED Hussein ‘Mmachinga,’ the Mainland Premier League’s top goal scorer record holder, has expressed his desire to see a Tanzanian player match his record.

The former Young Africans net-burster scored 26 goals in 1997 to help his club win the league title, and his record stands today.

In an exclusive interview yesterday, he stated that he wants to see a Tanzanian player break his 26- goal record.

“Anyone can break my record but I would like to see a Tanzanian player scoring at least 27 goals in one season, I will be happy if that will come to pass. I believe the major difficulty for our attackers is a lack of ‘positioning expertise, which is the most vital talent when it comes to scoring goals.

“For those who are willing to get goal scoring advises, I am readily available and I will be able to share with them when necessary,” he stated.

Commenting on who he believes has a better chance of winning the season’s golden boot award, Mmachinga stated that the last matches of the campaign will determine.

“Both Stephanie Aziz Ki (Yanga) and Feisal Salum (Azam) have almost an equal chance to claim the top score’s prize at the end of the season, we just need to wait for the last matches and see what they will produce,” he stated.

As it stands, Aziz Ki and Feisal each have 18 goals from 29 league games, giving each other no breathing room in their pursuit of the prestigious trophy.

On Saturday, Feisal scored twice against Kagera Sugar to temporarily lead the golden boot race with 18 goals to Aziz Ki’s 17, but the latter scored late against Tabora United at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to even the score.

Meanwhile, Azam and Simba who are still competing for the second spot in the Premier League on level points, will play their games tomorrow to know which team becomes the runner up in the NBC Premier League and joins Champions, Young Africans as Tanzania’s envoys in the CAF Champions League for 2024/2025.

Azam, who are second on goal difference, play an away match against relegation-threatened Geita Gold at Nyankumbu Stadium in Geita, while Simba will host JKT Tanzania at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on the same day.
