Musoma rural schools in need of more science labs

MUSOMA: MUSOMA Rural education and development stakeholders have been urged to support initiatives aimed at increasing the number of science students by contributing to the construction of laboratories in every ward secondary school.

The initiative aligns with the campaign to construct laboratories for all science subjects, including Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in every ward school. The effort aims to enable more students to pursue studies in the critical fields.

In a statement issued yesterday by the office of Musoma Rural Constituency Member of Parliament, Professor Sospeter Muhongo, it was highlighted that out of 26 secondary schools, there are only 41 laboratories, with numbers showing a deficit of 78 laboratories.

“We have 26 government secondary schools and two private secondary schools, with an additional 12 new schools currently under construction,” said Prof Muhongo, adding that “there are currently only 41 science laboratories for subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the secondary schools, whereas 78 are required.”

He further noted that among the 26 government secondary schools, only seven schools have laboratories for all three science subjects, eight schools have two laboratories and seven have none.

The MP mentioned schools currently that lack laboratories as Bukwaya, Busambara, Mtiro, Murangi, Nyanja, Seka and Tegeruka. Schools with only one laboratory include Bukima Secondary School, Dan Mapigano and Kasoma Mabuimerafuru.

The legislator added that, as part of the campaign to build science laboratories, fundraising efforts are being conducted through his office to support the construction of the facilities.

He also acknowledged the efforts being made by community members, in collaboration with local government leaders, to expedite the construction of three laboratories in each ward secondary school.

Moreover, he urged more stakeholders to support these initiatives for the betterment of science education in the country.
