Mwinyi unveils plant for sports stadium

ZANZIBAR: Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi has announced plans to construct a major football sports stadium that will meet the standards of both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Dr. Mwinyi revealed the initiative during a meeting with leaders, coaching staff, and players from Simba SC at the State House in Zanzibar, Wednesday.
He emphasized that the goal is to make Zanzibar the venue for tournaments involving local league players (CHAN 2024 that will be played in 2025) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).
He also praised Simba SC for its commitment to establishing a soccer academy in Zanzibar and assured the club of government support, including providing land for the academy’s construction.
In response, Simba SC Chairman Mr Murtaza Mangungu assured Dr. Mwinyi that the club is ready to promote Zanzibar internationally through sports tourism.

He also commended the President’s efforts to enhance sports facilities across Unguja and Pemba, highlighting sports as a vital tool for fostering unity, joy, and love among citizens.
The club’s visit to the President precedes their second NBC Premier League match on Thursday against Azam FC, scheduled for 8:30 PM at the Amani Complex.
The match is anticipated to be highly competitive following Simba SC’s 3-1 victory over Al Ahly Tripoli in the CAF Confederation Cup, which has boosted their confidence.
Azam FC also enters the match with momentum, having secured wins in the last two games in NBC Premier Legue.
