NBC Bank provides transformative financial education to Pugu students

DAR ES SALAAM: In a remarkable initiative to empower the youth, the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has stepped up to provide comprehensive financial education and training to the students and teachers of Pugu Boys Secondary School in Ilala Municipality, Dar es Salaam.

This strategic move by NBC aims to instil a strong culture of saving, foster entrepreneurial mindsets, and equip the young learners with the knowledge to effectively utilize financial institutions, including the bank, for their economic benefit.

A seminar on these crucial topics was held at the school over the weekend, led by Ms. Sarah Laiser, the Head of the Compliance Unit at NBC, accompanied by other senior officials of the bank, including the Head of the Customer Service Unit.

They were warmly welcomed by the Head of the School, Teacher Boniface Orenda, along with a team of teachers and students.

“Financial education for students is important because it enables them to understand early on how to manage and handle their money, create and follow budgets, and make sound financial decisions,” explained Ms. Laiser.

“Furthermore, our presence here today aims to help these students recognize the importance of savings, investments, and responsible use of credit.

We believe that they are the entrepreneurs, investors, and future officials, so it is important to start preparing them early so that they also know how to utilize financial institutions to improve their lives.”

During their time at the school, the NBC officials had the opportunity to provide training and present various topics on financial matters, entrepreneurship, and other related subjects.

The students, including those with special needs, were actively engaged in discussions and had the chance to ask questions related to the presented topics.

“We also had the opportunity to introduce our specialized services to students and teachers, including Student Accounts and Mwalimu Accounts designed to meet the needs of these groups.

We also provided various gifts including jerseys from clubs participating in the NBC Premier League, balls, and personal gifts which were handed over to the school management and various students,” added Ms. Laiser.

The visit also included a tree planting exercise for fruit and shade trees on the school premises, showcasing NBC’s commitment to environmental conservation and leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Speaking on the significance of the training, Teacher Orenda, the Headmaster of the school, expressed his gratitude to NBC Bank for this initiative.

“This education will help the students, especially those who are expected to graduate, to have the knowledge of saving, and to build entrepreneurial skills even when they are unable to pursue higher education,” he said.

According to the teacher, the importance of financial education for the students becomes even more evident when they graduate, as some of them engage in various economic activities, including business, and even for those who continue with higher education, financial education still helps them make informed financial decisions regarding student loans and money management.

“The comprehensive financial education program provided by NBC Bank to the students and teachers has the potential to transform the lives of these young individuals, empowering them to make informed financial decisions, nurture their entrepreneurial aspirations, and ultimately contribute to the economic growth of their communities and the nation as a whole.’’ He added.
