New TWLP champs Simba Queens eye to set record

DAR ES SALAAM: THE newly crowned Tanzania Women Premier League (TWLP) champions Simba Queens have continued to stamp their authority in the league after earning a 2-0 victory over Fountain Gates Princess at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam,.

Following this victory earned on Monday, Simba Queens have collected 49 points sitting comfortably at the top of the league followed by the dethroned champions JKT Queens who had bagged 40 points, and Yanga Princess on 33 points at the third slot with only one game remaining before the end of the 2023/24 season.

The new champions have played 17 games won 16 games and registered one draw are looking to set a record of clinching the league title with an unbeaten record with only a game remaining to wind up the season.

The 2-0 victory with goals from Jentrix Shikangwa and Aisha Mnunka for Simba Queens marks the fourth league title since the inception of the TWPL, reclaiming the championship from JKT Queens, who won it last season after taking it from them.

Winning the league means Simba Queens will represent Tanzania in the East and Central Africa (CECAFA) tournament, where the champion will qualify for the African Women’s Champions League.

In other games, Bunda Queens suffered a 1-0 defeat to Yanga Princess at their home ground, Karume Stadium in Mara.

Baobab Queens emerged victorious with a 3-2 win against Ceasiaa Queens at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma. Elsewhere, JKT Queens triumphed with a 4-0 win against Fountain Gate, while Amani Queens defeated Geita Gold Queens 1-0 in the final match.

Due to the result, Geita Queens are officially relegated from the women’s topflight league after collecting only six points from 17 games played Alliance Girls with 11 points, Bunda Queens and Baobab Queens tied on 13 points one of the three sides are at risk of being relegated alongside Geita and that will be determined in their last games
