NGOs urged to amplify voices against immoral practices, GBV

DAR ES SALAAM: NON-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been urged to raise awareness and raise their voices over immoral practices and other form of violence to have societies which exercise basic rights and honour national values.

Speaking during the annual general meeting of the National Council of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NACONGO), Ubungo District Commissioner, Mr Hassan Bomboko said there is need to observe norms, values and traditions for the wellbeing of the nation.

“Raise your voices and create awareness to people from all walks of life so that we can be able to build a country which is guided with norms, traditions, culture of good will and moral values,” he said.

He said with the ongoing misconduct and violation of human rights in some areas in the country, there is no reason for the NGOs to remain silent, saying the society is facing immoral actions that need collective efforts to address.

Mr Bomboko said gender based violence among children and girls were among major problems that are facing the society at the moment, calling for NGO’s intervention to address the problem.

On his part, NACONGO Chairperson for Ubungo, Shiganga George said most NGOs were facing some challenges in executing their activities.

He said lack of funds, bureaucracy with local government authorities and lack of operational capacity were among major challenges that hamper the organisations’ performance.

However, he said NACONGO was looking forward to set a strong strategy that will increase their engagement and enable them to provide awareness training for the improved socio-economic welfare and wellbeing of the societies.
