Play part in competitive economy, Prof Kitila tells public entities

ARUSHA: MINISTER of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), Professor Kitila Mkumbo, has urged public entities to play their part in achieving a competitive economy by delivering high-quality services.
Speaking during the second forum for heads of public entities and board chairpersons in Arusha yesterday, Prof Mkumbo said efficient performance among the public institutions can substantially accelerate the country’s economic growth.
“Public entities, as institutions for service provision, should strive to deliver world-class services,” Prof Mkumbo said.
He noted that the approach aligns with the National Development Vision 2025, which aims to spur economic growth, enhance the wellbeing of people and develop human capital.
Prof Mkumbo emphasised that public entities have a crucial role in achieving the development vision and should avoid inactivity. He encouraged them to explore opportunities in the global market by leveraging their competitive advantages and investing beyond national borders.
He commended Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) for internationalising its services by providing high-quality medical care, positioning itself as a top destination for both domestic and international patients.
Moreover, the Minister urged other public entities, including universities to rebrand and develop strategies to remain competitive on a global scale.
He stated that this year’s three-day forum brought together CEOs and board chairpersons of public entities to create a roadmap for achieving international success. The forum featured international speakers to facilitate technology transfer and experience sharing.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Investments, Mr Vuma Augustine, noted that the total value of all public investments currently stands at 76.56tri/-. However, he pointed out that many public entities underperform due to poor leadership, lack of accountability and inadequate capital.
The MP acknowledged the government’s investment of 76.56tri/- in public institutions and praised the continued investment. He urged underperforming institutions to find ways to improve so that the benefits of public investment can be fully realised.

Government Chief Spokesperson and Director of Tanzania Information Services (MAELEZO), Mr Thobias Makoba, emphasised that it is now time for public entities to invest in foreign markets and bring profits back home.
He highlighted that if some foreign public corporations can operate profitably in Tanzania, it is certainly possible for Tanzanian public entities to achieve similar success abroad.
