Police mounts probe on gang rape incident

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Police Force has called for calm as they conduct investigation into the recent incident in which a woman was raped by a group of young men in Dar es Salaam.
The Police Force Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) David Misime, said in a statement issued yesterday that the investigation is currently underway and appropriate legal action will be taken against all those found liable for the criminal offense.
After the investigation is completed, a report will be issued to the public in accordance with the country’s laws. He further advised the public to express their opinions on the incident through social media in a friendly manner to avoid further hurting the victim.
“We have been receiving calls from various media houses inquiring about the progress of the investigation related to this incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police force will soon provide a report to the public. All suspects involved will be arrested,” said SACP Misime in his statement.
The young woman from the Yombo Dovya area in Temeke Municipality was brutally raped and victimised in a manner that goes against the laws of nature by a group of men who reportedly acted under the orders of their superior, who allegedly accused the victim of having an affair with her husband.

A video clip showing the brutal incident spread on social media over the weekend. On Monday, the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) issued a special public notice condemning the incident.
“This incident not only goes against our country’s laws but also contradicts Tanzania’s morals and culture,” the statement said.
Furthermore, they called on the Police Force to take appropriate legal action and ensure that all perpetrators and facilitators of this heinous act are arrested and brought to justice immediately.
According to the statement, TLS opposes all acts of violence and abuse against women and is ready to cooperate with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies to ensure that the culprits are brought before the appropriate judicial authorities for charges.
“We received information through social media and a special public notice from the Tanzania Police Force regarding a video circulating on social media showing a woman being subjected to acts of rape and sexual violence by a group of men while they recorded,” according to the public notice by the Governing Council of the TLS.
The incident has sparked public outcry, demanding justice and accountability for the sexual abuse.
