President Samia calls for peace, as army turns 60

DAR ES SALAAM: President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has urged Tanzanians to uphold peace and fulfill their constitutional duty to protect the nation.
Speaking at the 60th anniversary of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) at Uhuru Stadium on Sunday, President Samia stressed the critical role citizens play in supporting the military, particularly in times of crisis.
“Our military has always been a sanctuary for our people during natural disasters and accidents,” said President Samia.

The President highlighted the military’s essential role in maintaining national security and promoting peace within Tanzania and across Africa.
“Our military has remained defensive, not aggressive.
We have never invaded any country; instead, our military stands as a beacon of liberation and a symbol of peacekeeping across Africa and the world,” she added.
President Samia also emphasized the military’s commitment to adapting to technological advancements and global economic shifts.
She noted ongoing efforts to revive industries, aimed at reducing reliance on imports and conserving foreign exchange.
“The military is pivotal in implementing the government’s vision, ensuring our progress aligns with the national strategy to strengthen the economy and attract investment,” she said.
She expressed confidence in the military’s discipline and loyalty and urged senior officers to uphold the trust Tanzanians have in them.
Minister of Defence Dr. Stergomena Tax thanked President Samia for her leadership, emphasizing her dedication to unity, integrity, and patriotism.
“We appreciate your efforts in unifying the nation, strengthening our defence forces, and making them a pillar of peace domestically and internationally,” said Dr. Tax.
The Minister also reaffirmed the military’s readiness to protect the Constitution and sovereignty of Tanzania, as well as its active participation in international peacekeeping missions.
The 60th anniversary of the TPDF not only celebrates its history but also underscores the crucial role of a strong defence force in safeguarding Tanzania’s future.
