President Samia, top officials attend Nyerere’s Memorial Service in Mwanza

MWANZA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan and other top government officials including Vice President Dr Philip Mpango attended a Memorial Service for the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere at the Roman Catholic Church’s St. Francis Xavier Nyakahoja Parish in Mwanza on Monday.

Today, Tanzanians are observing the 25th anniversary of remembering the first President, who died at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, United Kingdom on October 14, 1999.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango urged the church and the nation to continue praying for peace, emphasizing its importance for the country’s development.

 

Dr. Mpango described Mwalimu Nyerere as a true patriot, noting his selfless dedication to solving the challenges faced by Tanzanians.

“He was a staunch advocate of peace and left behind a great legacy—building Tanzania into an island of peace,” the VP said.

Mwalimu’s legacy includes establishing high ethical standards for public leaders and taking a firm stance against corruption.

As the founder of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Mwalimu Nyerere played a pivotal role in the creation of the Organization of African Unity, promoting unity among African nations.

“He was a mediator in conflicts across Africa, including Burundi, and remained committed to defending Tanzania. When Ugandan dictator Idi Amin attempted to seize part of Tanzania’s territory, Mwalimu led the nation in repelling the invasion and supporting Ugandans in ousting Amin,” Dr. Mpango added.

Mwalimu Nyerere also left an enduring legacy of patriotism, having initiated the National Service program to instill a sense of duty and service among the youth.

 

“Mwalimu Nyerere has left behind strong foundations that continue to build a resilient nation,” the Vice President remarked.

After the service, the Head of State and other government leaders proceeded to CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza to officiate the climax of the Uhuru Torch race, a national symbol of freedom and unity.
