Prioritize public interest, Kombo urges Tanzania lawmakers in EALA

DODOMA: TANZANIAN Members of Parliament in the East African Legislative assembly (EALA) have been urged to carry out the responsibilities by ensuring that public interest remains their top priority.
The call was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo during a meeting with the MPs in Dodoma on Thursday.
Ambassador Kombo encouraged the MPs to ensure they promote unity, solidarity, and cooperation among East African Community (EAC) member states as they discharge their responsivities.
“The EAC has always been bound by a brotherly unity. It is your responsibility to uphold, strengthen, and respect this unity, in line with the Heads of State’s vision for a strong and united community,” he said.
The minister also stressed the importance of MPs being well-versed in government plans to effectively represent and defend Tanzania’s interests in the EAC Parliament.
He urged them to regularly review the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM)’s 2020-2025 election manifesto and the government’s development plans, including the annual budget, to align with the East African agenda.
Ambassador Kombo further assured the MPs that his ministry is open to receiving their input to enhance the implementation of EAC programmes.
“The Ministry has a Deputy Minister responsible for East African Affairs, Denis Londo; a Secretary General, Ambassador Stephen Mbundi and director who handles EAC matters. I am here as well. Whenever issues arise that need our input or guidance, please feel free to consult us,” he said.

He also reminded the MPs of the ministry’s commitment to economic diplomacy, urging them to use their platforms to promote Tanzania’s opportunities within the region.
Currently, Tanzania has nine representatives serving in the EALA, which is the legislative arm of the EAC.
The MPs play a vital role in shaping and passing laws that facilitate regional integration and cooperation.
As part of the EALA, they are tasked with ensuring that Tanzanian interests are well represented in discussions on matters such as trade, security, and social development within the region.
