RC orders tough actions to protect wildlife as Grumeti Fund celebrates World Ranger Day

MARA:  Mara Regional Commissioner Col. Evans Mtambi has ordered government security agencies to ensure all wildlife conservation areas remain free from poachers and any other activities causing destruction to the animals’ habitat.

The RC was speaking yesterday during this year’s World Ranger Day celebrations held at the Grumeti Fund’s Environmental Education Centre (EEC) in Western Serengeti.

“I call upon security agencies to take tough measures against anyone who would mess up or destroy wildlife conservation areas.The government continues to take actions and we will continue doing so to ensure that our wildlife conservation areas remain safe,” the RC said.

The RC also commended Grumeti Fund for supporting efforts being made by the government to protect and conserve wild animals, including the endangered species in the area.

Meanwhile, Grumeti Fund has thanked game rangers protecting wildlife at the Ikorongo- Grumeti Game Reserves and Ikona Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Western Serengeti.

“On behalf of Grumeti Fund and Grumeti Reserves LTD, we are saying thank you so much for the good job,” the Grumeti Fund General Manager, Mr Matt Perry told the rangers .

Ikorongo– Grumeti Game Reserves border Serengeti, the world-famous park which remains one of the country’s major tourist destinations, attracting thousands of tourists from different parts of the world.

The game reserves also border the Ikona Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Besides supporting wild life conservation, Grumeti Fund, a Non-for profit Organization (NPO) that supports community development initiatives in more than 22 villages adjacent Ikorongo- Game Reserves and Ikona WMA in Serengeti and Bunda districts of Mara region.

On his part, the Ikorongo- Grumeti Commanding Officer, Mr Namsifu Marwa reassured the RC that they will continue protecting the game reserves at any cost.

Mr Marwa also told the RC that the Ikorongo -Grumeti Game Reserves, serving under the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), has an exemplary private partnership with Grumeti Fund.

The colourful ranger day was attended by other senior government officials including the new Serengeti District Commissioner, Ms Kemirembe Lwota.
