Renewable energy drive to spur economic growth, enhance quality of life

TANZANIA: TANZANIA’S commitment to harnessing renewable energy highlights the transformative potential of clean energy in driving economic growth and enhancing quality of life, according to, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy (Electricity and Renewable Energy) Dr Khatibu Kazungu.

At a recent reception honouring 25 Tanzanian delegates heading to India for advanced energy grid operations training—part of the US-India-Tanzania Triangular Development Partnership (TriDeP) funded by USAID—Dr Kazungu underscored the programme’s significance.

He noted that the TriDeP partnership seeks to fortify Tanzania’s energy grid by improving policy frameworks, constructing regional interconnections and developing large-scale solar projects to deliver clean, reliable energy to Tanzanian communities.

“We hope the discussions in India over the next two weeks will yield actionable results that support the Tanzanian government’s efforts to accelerate renewable energy deployment and foster low-carbon growth,” Dr Kazungu said.

“Together, the US, India and Tanzania are setting a precedent for collaboration in clean energy, marking the first initiative of its kind in Africa.”

Addressing the delegates, Dr Kazungu acknowledged the forthcoming challenges and opportunities.

“In the coming weeks, you will explore advanced technologies and strategies for modernising electrical grids and enhancing power system operations. The skills you acquire will be pivotal in boosting the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of Tanzania’s power systems,” he said.

He emphasised that the programme represents not only a valuable opportunity for personal and professional development but also a critical contribution to building a greener, more resilient energy infrastructure.

US Ambassador to Tanzania Michael Battle expressed pride in the Tanzanian delegation’s participation, calling it a significant step toward strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and advancing renewable energy efforts.

“This partnership with India and Tanzania reflects the US government’s commitment to forging lasting global partnerships that drive sustainable development and energy security,” he added.

During the programme from September 14 to 28 this year, Tanzanian delegates will work with Indian technical experts, gaining insights into power system operations, policy frameworks, renewable energy integration, and grid standards.

Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania Bishwadip Dey praised the bilateral relations between India and Tanzania, particularly in promoting renewable energy through the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

“I believe the collaboration under TriDeP will further enhance our partnership and drive significant growth in Tanzania’s renewable energy sector. I wish the Tanzanian team a productive training and extend my gratitude to the US for their partnership,” he said.
