Samia donates for renovation of Nyakijoga Shrine

BUKOBA: BUKOBA Catholic Diocese Bishop Jovitus Mwijage has expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for contributing 50m/- for renovation of the historic Nyakijoga Shrine in Missenyi District.

During a recent pilgrimage attended by thousands, including international visitors, Bishop Mwijage announced plans to significantly upgrade the shrine.

A 100-capacity hostel is set to be constructed to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims who flock to the site annually.

“On behalf of all Kagera citizens, I extend my sincere thanks to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her 50-million-shilling contribution to this important project,” Bishop Mwijage said.

Highlighting the importance of religious tolerance, Bishop Mwijage urged Kagera residents to maintain peace and harmony.

“We should not let a few divide us. God created us all equal,” he emphasise and appealed to parents to prioritise their children’s upbringing, fostering future generations of responsible citizens.

Located in Mugana Parish, the Nyakijoga Shrine, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, serves as a place of pilgrimage where worshippers can seek spiritual blessings, similar to those sought by pilgrims to Lourdes, France.

Elevated to international status over 50 years ago with efforts from the late Laurian Cardinal Rugambwa, Nyakijoga attracts thousands annually for Marian feast days, offering a serene environment for reflection and prayer.

In addition to Nyakijoga, the Bukoba Diocese has designated Kishoberwa village as a pilgrimage site to honor Saint Yohane Maria Muzeeyi. The first Tanzanian to be canonised, Saint Muzeeyi’s martyrdom has inspired countless believers. Pilgrims visit the village to pay homage to this revered saint and seek his intercession.

Bishop Mwijage noted that Muzeeyi, as a martyr under Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda in 1887. Today, the shrine serves as a spiritual destination for Catholics worldwide who honour Saint Muzeeyi’s legacy.
