Serengeti Safari Marathon attracts over 2,000 runners

MARA: THE Seventh Edition of the Serengeti Safari Marathon is set to take place on November 16, with more than 2,000 runners from around the world expected to participate.
The marathon offers a unique experience for participants to run through the breath-taking plains of the Serengeti National Park. The event aims to promote conservation, boost tourism and engage local communities through sports tourism.
Speaking with the ‘Daily News’ about the event, the Director of Seregeti Safari Marathon, Timothy Mdinka, narrated that the event will be one of its kind and that they want runners to do a workout while they enjoy the endless plains of Serengeti National Park.
“The Seventh Edition of Serengeti Safari Marathon has attracted more than 2,000 runners from around the world. The race will be flagged off at Butiama village in Mara region, which is the birthplace of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the revered Tanzania Founding Father,” he said.
He added: “The race embodies three core values that are enhancing conservation, boosting tourism and benefitting local populations through active engagement in sports tourism. “It is one-of-a-kind event that draws together athletes, joggers, tourists and the general public. It is more than winning medals, the event will bring together runners from all over the globe to experience the breath-taking and majestic trails of Serengeti,” he noted.

Mdinka noted that Tanzanians will part ways with 4.32 US dollars while foreigners will, each have to pay 83 US dollars to participate in the unique marathon.
He pointed out that, “The concept of hosting sports events within the park is not only a fantastic opportunity for athletes, it is also a way to promote sports tourism. The blend of adventure, physical activity and the chance to explore pristine environments to attract participants from around the world.”
“The Serengeti Safari Marathon ties with the United Nations concept of sustainable tourism. It serves to showcase Tanzania as a destination for sports enthusiasts but also highlights the importance of conservation and sustainable tourism,” he concluded.
