Stars buoyant to edge past DRC

DRC: TAIFA Stars players have promised to edge past the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in their third match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).). The team departed yesterday, is set to face DRC in qualifier at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa tomorrow. The two sides will meet again for the return leg at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on October 15th.

Abdallah Said, who is making his first call-up to the national team, acknowledged the challenges of playing away but noted that the effective tactical training provided by the coaching staff will help them do well and emerge victorious.

“If given the chance to play, I will work hard to help my team succeed and showcase my potential in representing my country,” said the KMC player.

Defender Mohamed Hussein also shared his optimism, stating that the team is in good shape and prepared for the upcoming matches.

“We are progressing well, and I can confidently say that we have no issues. With the full support of our fellow Tanzanians, I believe we will succeed,” he noted.

Taifa Stars are aiming for their fourth AFCON finals qualification and are well-positioned, as three of their remaining four matches will be held at the iconic Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Currently, in Group H, DR Congo leads with 6 points after winning two of their initial fixtures, while Tanzania sits in second place with four points from one win and one draw. Ethiopia is third with 1 point from a goalless draw against Tanzania, and Guinea remains at the bottom, winless and point-less.

In another development, the players expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for arranging flights to and from DRC. He emphasized that the travel arrangement will significantly reduce travel fatigue ahead and after their crucial match.

“On behalf of my teammates, I want to thank President Samia for this thoughtful gesture,” said Said, who is making his first call-up to the national team.

“The direct flight to and from DRC will help us minimize travel fatigue. Despite this being my first time with the national team, I have adapted quickly, and we are all focused on the tough away match ahead,” he noted.
