Stars suffer away defeat

KINSHASA: TANZANIA national team, ‘Taifa Stars’ has suffered an away defeat in their African Cup of Nations Group H match against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), losing 1-0 at Pentecost Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa on Thursday.

Despite a spirited effort, Stars were unable to find the back of the net, while DRC capitalized on a crucial moment to secure the victory.

The loss leaves Taifa Stars with much to reflect on, as they look to regroup in their upcoming match against DRC at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Tuesday.

The match unfolded like a tense chess game, with Tanzania opting for a more defensive posture while the DRC pushed forward, seeking to dominate possession.

Tanzania’s strategy was clear; absorb the pressure and wait for opportunities.

In the first half, DRC’’s relentless pressing created a flurry of chances, but their efforts bore no fruit, ending in a goalless stalemate in the first half.

The most promising moment for DRC came in the 17th minute when Samuel Essende launched a strike, connecting with Théo Bongonda’s perfectly weighted pass.

However, Tanzania’s goalkeeper, Ally Salim, was a guardian at the corner of the net, expertly thwarting the attack with nimble footwork that seemed to dance as he positioned himself just right.

Despite DRC’s command of the ball, Stars were not without their own moments of danger. In the 36th minute, Mbwana Samatta unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, the ball slicing through the air like a comet, only to sail narrowly wide, leaving the crowd gasping.

Each time DRC pressed, it felt like hitting a brick wall—intense but ultimately unyielding, as Tanzania held their ground, ready for the next challenge.

As the second half kicked off, DRC appeared revitalized, their high-pressing strategy putting immediate pressure on Tanzania’s defence.

With the Taifa Stars goalkeeper caught off guard, he was unable to adjust in time, and the ball found its way into the net.

The crowd erupted in joyous celebration, their hopes momentarily soaring as DRC took the lead.

Things took a turn for the worse for Tanzania as DRC’s winger, Théo Bongonda, became a relentless force on the field.

He danced past defenders with ease, his dribbling skills putting immense pressure on Tanzania’s backline, leaving them scrambling to keep up.

In the 80th minute, DRC nearly doubled their lead, when Arthur Masuaku stepped up for a powerful free kick.

The tension in the stadium was palpable as he struck the ball, sending it hurtling toward the goal.

It struck the woodwork with a deafening thud, reverberating through the air and leaving the crowd momentarily breathless.
