State moves to combat NCDs

DODOMA: State moves to combat NCDs THE government has unveiled a robust strategy to combat the rising prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes, as part of its fifth health sector plan.
Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Godwin Mollel, said this in Parliament on Tuesday while responding to a basic question from a Special Seats MP Mwatum Dau Haji regarding the government’s plans to address the growing diabetes burden.
Responding, Dr Mollel outlined several key initiatives, including public education campaigns about diabetes prevention through health education programmes that promote healthy eating, regular physical activity, and avoidance of harmful substances like alcohol and tobacco.
“Another initiative is improving access to healthcare where efforts are underway to enhance the availability of essential medicines, diagnostic tools, and medical supplies for diabetes management across the country,” he said
Dr Mollel further said on capacity building the government is investing in the training of healthcare professionals to provide high-quality care for people with diabetes.
“The government, through the fifth health sector plan, has prioritized the prevention and control of NCDs diseases, including diabetes,” said Dr Mollel
He added, “We are taking a comprehensive approach that includes public education, improved access to healthcare, and capacity building,”
In response to a follow-up question about specific dietary guidelines, Speaker Dr Tulia Ackson directed the government to provide detailed information on recommended diets for diabetes prevention.
The Speaker said it was crucial to provide education to parliamentarians and the general public about healthy eating habits.
