State recruits 18,449 teachers, health workers

THE government has recruited 18,449 teachers and health workers, while announcing a number of interventions to fill the gap of 2,751 health experts still required to meet the shortage.

Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Ms Angellah Kairuki told the media on Monday that the 2,751 jobs, which were up for grab were among the announced 21,200 new employment opportunities in both education and health sectors, but some posts failed to attract applicants in accordance with the criteria set.

The reasons, especially for the posts of physiotherapists, radiologists and health attendants to miss applicants was due to some local institutions to stop offering the respective courses or the number of graduates being too small compared to the market needs.

She said the ministry will re-advertise the posts by setting the criteria which will attract the get experts, especially those dealing with X-ray and Ultra sounds machines as the government continue to improve health infrastructures needs the cadres.

On top of that, the government has started working with a number of education institutions to come up with the courses to fill in the experts’ gap and increase production of the health cadres.

Ms Kairuki said of the recruited employees there are 13, 130 teachers and 5,319 health workers. Among the teachers, primary schools got a 7,801 share and the remaining 5,329 will serve in secondary schools.

She hailed President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s decision to issue an employment permit of 21,200 on April 12th, this year, which attracted 171,916 applications of which 76,190 were women and 95,726 men.

The health sector received 48,705 applicants and 123,211 teachers applications but after thorough verification and shortlisting as per criteria set in number of phases they remained with 86,448 who have had met the requirements.

The minister named some of the shortfalls that failed some applicants to meet the criteria as failure to attach the academic credentials, professional licences, failure to submit birth certificates and cheating that they are persons with disabilities.

Some of the anomalies in the applications, she said, among the 169 applications from the person with disabilities category, 64 pretended to be with albinism, while only 24 has the skin disability.

Minister Kairuki condemned those who misuse the persons with disability employment window, saying they received 1,169 applications amongst 413 did not have any kind of disability, saying they will cross check again when they report to their duty stations for verification.

Ms Kairuki further said that there were 56 fake academic credentials, while 50 applicants submitted education certificates which are in the public servants employment list.

The employment opportunities were open for Tanzanians holding certificate, diploma and degree education levels.

The aspiring teachers should have graduated between 2015 and 2022 and not aged above 45 years same as for the health sector.

The government will sign contracts with the newly recruits that should require them to remain in their respective deployed stations for three years before seeking transfer.
