Students express feelings over school construction

SOME students of Samia Girls Secondary School at Mpima village in Mgomba ward, Coast region, have expressed their appreciation to the government and the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) following construction of their school that lays foundation for them to reach their dreams.

They were speaking during a familiarisation tour of the programmes’ activities conducted by officials from the Zanzibar Second Vice President’s Office accompanied by the TASAF Community Management Committee (CMC) from Kizimkazi-Dimbani village on Wednesday.

A form one student, Shymaa Ponela, said formerly students faced many challenges, including walking up to 6 kilometres to go to school, a factor that was impeding their good performance.

“We thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for constructing for us the school, as now we are sure that our dreams will be realised,” said Shymaa.

Besides, the student pleaded with the government and TASAF to support the school with textbooks and a reliable clean and safe water supply.

She revealed that the shortage of books was affecting their learning as students have nowhere to make further reference.

Equally, she noted that the available water contained too much salt making it unfavorable for drinking, calling upon authorities to look for a solution.

The Head Teacher at Samia Girls Secondary School, Ms Rose Ushaki indicated that the school has a total 38 female students who all reside there, stating that they have been selected due to high performance in science subjects.

For his part an official from the Zanzibar Second Vice President’s Office, Mr Makame Ally Haji expressed confidence that the school will generate a good product that will later serve as a leader and contribute to the development of the country.

Elaborating on the school establishment project, the Acting Village Executive Officer, Ms Flora Magoti revealed that the project was identified by the residents of the area to cater for the many challenges facing girls including the issue of long distance and wild animals like crocodiles.

She noted that a sum of about 146.7m/- was received from TASAF for implantation of four classrooms and eight toilet holes.

“The project had been effected through a force account system whereby the whole project accumulated around 151.8m/-…the school has been completed by 100 percent and students are going on with studies,” she said.
