Tanzania to have highest number of radars in East, Central Africa

TANZANIA: TANZANIA is set to have seven radars by the end of this year, making it the country with the highest number of the devices among East and Central African nations.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa attributed the development to the significant investment being made by the government in the meteorology sector, including installing modern infrastructure to strengthen systems for monitoring weather information.

The Premier revealed that on Sunday while delivering the government statement to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in Mwanza City.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for the significant investment in this sector and her commitment to prioritizing special groups, as well as setting strong strategies aimed at empowering the youth both socially and economically,” he said.

The Prime Minister added that this year’s commemoration offers an opportunity to strengthen national and international cooperation in order to join forces to protect children and youth from the impacts of disasters.

“To attain the goal at the national level, we must take advantage of this opportunity to educate the public on strategies to protect themselves from disasters, particularly by raising awareness about weather patterns and how to address climate change. We should also organize meetings to discuss disaster-related challenges and establish joint strategies for overcoming them,” he said.

He said that respective authorities are supposed to conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of education and communication related to disaster risk reduction.

Majaliwa added that the relevant authorities should conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of education and risk communication, along with community engagement.

They should also organize cultural and sports events to raise awareness and provide education through entertainment, promote research on the impacts of disasters, and provide public information to increase understanding.

Prime Minister further directed the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and its institutions to continue enhancing the education curriculum by incorporating safety-related topics in schools to reduce risks and raise awareness about disasters.

He emphasized the need to ensure that teachers are trained in teaching strategies related to disaster management.

Additionally, Mr Majaliwa urged authorities to promote the use of short-maturing seed varieties and to focus on preserving food and livestock fodder. He called for strengthening knowledge on modern farming techniques that require minimal water.

Earlier, while receiving a report on the Uhuru Torch Race climax celebrations and the 25th anniversary of the death of the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the Premier expressed satisfaction with the event preparations.

Meanwhile, President Samia is expected to attend the celebrations at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza today.

In a related development, President Samia is also expected to attend a special mass at St Francis Xavier Catholic Parish in Mwanza to honour the Father of the Nation on the same day.

On his part, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youths, Employment and Persons with Disabilities) Ridhiwani Kikwete stated that all preparations have been completed.
