Tanzania urges durable solutions to challenges in Africa

TANZANIA: TANZANIA has urged African countries to cooperate in search of durable solutions to their problems and challenges.
The country also encouraged Japanese businesspeople and investors to continue trading and investing more in Africa so as to significantly contribute to the human development in effort to advance regional and global peace and stability.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr Cosato Chumi made the call while, contributing to the topic of Peace and Stability: Ensuring Human Dignity and Human Security during the second session of the Ministerial-level of Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held in Japan from August 24-25, 2024.
Tanzania also commended Japan for being at the forefront of participating in international efforts and urged other international partners to follow the suit.
Mr Chumi noted that Tanzania recognises the importance of equal participation and inclusion of women and men, girls and boys in ensuring the prevalence of peace and security.
The Deputy minister mentioned that due to that significance, Tanzania is in the final stages of preparing and implementing a National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security as part of the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1325 of the year 2000.
He said Tanzania has always played a vital role in mediation processes, peaceful dialogues and other diplomatic ways to ensure peace and stability is maintained within and beyond her boundaries.
He added that the country has fortunately been able to eliminate the roots of tribal wars and conflicts by uniting about 126 tribes with one National Language of Kiswahili.
“We have maintained the tradition of providing sanctuary to hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers from our neighbouring countries and beyond. As I speak to you today, Tanzania is hosting about 237,997 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority of them being women and children,” he emphasised.
He said Aspiration 4 of Agenda 2063 of African Union stresses a peaceful and secure Africa and aims at strengthening good governance, accountability and transparency, secure peace and reconciliation and putting forward strategies for financing security needs.
“Cognizant of this ambitious aspiration, Tanzania has undertaken resolute actions in that front, through her contribution of 1,537 peacekeepers, including 124 women to various United Nations and African Union peacekeeping operations, making her the 11th largest contributor globally and the 5th contributor in Africa. I take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our host, Japan for being in fore front in these global efforts and appeal to other international partners to follow suit,” he insisted.

Equally important, Tanzania embraces the importance of equal participation and inclusion of women and men, girls and boys, in ensuring peace and security. “We are in the final stage of developing and operationalising the National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1325 of 2000,” he stressed.
The 9th TICAD 2024 was officiated by Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yoko Kamikawa.
It was attended by Ministers, TICAD partners, representatives and co-organisers such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, the African Union Commission, international and regional organisations as well as the private and civil sectors from Japan and African Continent.
