TASAC surpasses strategic target

ARUSHA: THE Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), a semi-autonomous government agency, announced on Saturday that it has exceeded its strategic targets by recording high performance for the financial year 2023/24, as outlined in its Corporate Strategic Plan (2021/22 – 2025/26).
The achievement marks a significant progress compared to the previous two years (2022/23 and 2021/22) financial years
Presenting the results on behalf of the Director General during the 17th Joint Transport Sector Review (JTSR 2024) held in Arusha, the Director of Shipping Business, Mr Nelson Mlali said that TASAC successfully monitored all 60 targeted port terminals and the eight targeted ports equipped with security facilities to ensure compliance with International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) requirements.
“During the financial year 2023/24, we issued 15,298 seafarer certificates against a target of 10,000, in accordance with International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) standards,” he stated.
He added that the corporation continues to effectively control maritime accidents for vessels below and above 50 gross tonnes (GT).

During the review period, TASAC maintained its target of zero accidents for vessels above 50 GT and limited accidents for vessels below 50 GT to fewer than nine.
Mr Mlali further noted that TASAC aimed to reduce the time required for issuing licenses to regulated service providers, including port operators, dry port operators, shipping agencies and clearing and forwarding agencies.
“Another notable achievement is the development of two systems to enhance service provision: the TASAC Revenue Gateway System (TRG) and the Seafarers Identity System,” he added.
Established in 2017 under the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Act, Cap 415, TASAC is mandated to regulate the maritime transport sub-sector of Tanzania Mainland.
