Tigo, partners to plant trees in Rombo

KILIMANJARO: THREE institutions have teamed up to plant 22,000 trees in Rombo district, Kilimanjaro to mitigate climate change effects in the region.
The three Tigo Tanzania, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) plan to plant the tree this year under a campaign Tigo Green for Kili.
The campaign started in Hai, Kilimanjaro in 2021 by planting 10,000 trees.

Tigo Northern Zone Acting Director Mr Daniel Mainoya said the main goal was to restore the natural vegetation of Mount Kilimanjaro by planting trees in its surrounding areas.
Speaking at the event, Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Nurdin Babu, said that the government in the region will continue to cooperate with Tigo and other stakeholders in ensuring that the environments are properly maintained.
“Leaders at various levels in the region, citizens and other environmental stakeholders supposed to ensure that the trees planted campaign become a success,” Mr Babu said.
The WWF Tanzania Conservation Manage, Dr Lawrence Mbwambo, said that the campaign aims to improve the environment to also boost tourism in Rombo.
“WWF will continue to work with the government to ensure that the environment continues to be improved to promote the tourism sector,” he said.
Earlier, the Rombo District Commissioner, Mr Raymond Mangwala, said the district government district created a team of scouts who will be responsible for ensuring that conservation activities are sustainable in the district.
The district planted 450,000 trees between January and May, this year and the goal was to plant 1.5 million trees by December.
“We are confident of achieving this goal because we have also started a special campaign in schools termed ‘one student, one tree’ which needs every student from kindergarten to high school to plant a tree”, he said
