TMA underlines importance of timely weather forecast information

TANZANIA : TANZANIA Meteorological Authority (TMA) has underscored the importance of members of the public to get right weather information at a right time during the ongoing moderate El Niño which started last June.
The El Niño refers to a warming of the ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures, in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
“It is important for the citizens and other users of weather information to get right information at a right time in order to get prepared before the season starts,” Dr Ladislaus Chang’a, the TMA Acting Director General, said.
Dr Chang’a made statement on Wednesday in Kibaha during a media workshop ahead of the weather forecast report for bimodal areas (Vuli) season between October and December this year.
The workshop is a continuation of efforts by the TMA in ensuring that its weather information reaches the targeted audience at a right time and accurately.
When weather information reach the members of the public timely and rightly will help them address challenges of the climate change, Dr Chang’a added.
He said, not only the public will benefit from the information but it will also help responsible authorities to set plans for disaster management, food production and health for people’s wellbeing.
“In recognising the importance of weather forecast, the government has continued to build capacity of the authority in order to implements its duties effectively.
On her part, TMA Weather Analyst Ms Rose Senyagwa, said weather forecast for Masika season between March and April 2023 was accurate by 86.4 per cent.
